Professor Strauss specializes in American Jewish History and Modern Jewish literature and cultural history. Her dissertation was entitled, "Painting the Town Red: Jewish Visual Arts, Yiddish Culture, and Progressive Politics in New York, 1917-1939." She has published articles on American Jewish journals, women, and artists, and in 2004 she was a historical consultant or the Library of Congress exhibition "From Haven to Home: 350 Years of Jewish Life in America." Recently, she edited the book, Mediating Modernity: Challenges and Trends in the Jewish Encounter with the Modern World (2008). Dr. Strauss has taught Jewish Studies for over a decade at American University, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland, as well as numerous adult education courses in the Washington D.C. area.
