Undergraduate

In the Judaic Studies Program, undergraduate students explore over 3,000 years of history and culture, from the history of Jewish civilization to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the origins of Zionism to modern Hebrew language. The program’s interdisciplinary nature allows students to take courses with award-winning faculty from various disciplines, including religion, history and international affairs.

Whether students major or minor in the program, all enjoy the benefits of small class size and close interaction with faculty and fellow students. Additionally, students can take advantage of the cultural incubator that is Washington, D.C., with art museums, archives and events celebrating Jewish culture all within walking distance.

Hebrew courses are a popular choice among Judaic Studies Program students fulfilling elective requirements for the bachelor's degree or minor. Part of the GW Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Hebrew program helps students develop intermediate to advanced levels of Hebrew proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to undergraduate students, the Hebrew curriculum also attracts members of the greater Washington, D.C., community and GW faculty and staff.

"GW's Judaic Studies program strengthened my own Jewish identity in unexpected yet formative ways. Exchanging experiences and perspectives with classmates on the Diaspora, Israel, the Holocaust and American Jewry allowed me to critically evaluate my own preconceived notions and positions."
